AUTUMN TELECONFERENCE PROGRAMME 2006

FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS
Speaker
Olivia Gore, Awards for All

There is currently funding available for community groups in England from Awards for All. You can apply for between £300 and £10,000. This conference will enable you to ask questions of one of the Awards Officers and to find out more about the monies available for projects. Your community group will need to have a bank account and constitution before applying. There is no deadline – this is a rolling programme. Every participant will receive a 2006 updated A-Z guide of alternative funders and an Awards for All application form with criteria.

INVOLVING YOUNG PEOPLE
Speaker
Maryam Desai

Maryam is a member of the Bradford & Keighley Youth Parliament. She is keen to share her knowledge and opinions on how organisations can involve young people. She will talk about her own experiences and explain what prompted her to first get involved. Join us to talk about the barriers to young people getting involved and how we might go about breaking down these barriers. All participants will receive an information pack entitled “Youth Participation” written by a student for Quest Line telephone conferencing.

PRODUCING COMMUNITY NEWSLETTERS
Speaker
Mark Thomas, Chief Executive, Word Association

Words, pictures, design and printing – there’s so much involved in putting together an effective newsletter. A former journalist, Mark has 20 years experience of newsletters and can help make yours a success.

TACKLING ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR & WITNESS INTIMIDATION
Speakers
Marianne Rustad, Community Safety & Drugs Team
Brendan Keegan, Community Beat Officer

We will be talking about the way that residents can tackle anti social behaviour in their communities. Join us to share views on this national issue. This conference will also enable participants to share views and experiences of witness intimidation. We will be talking about ways in which the identity of witnesses can be protected during an investigation. In exceptional cases a witnesses identity can be protected during the trial itself. Link up to find out more. All participants will receive an information pack on the subject and a post conference report on the key conclusions discussed.

ORGANISING A SUCCESSFUL EVENT
Speaker
Amy Liddington, Events Manager, Word Association

Whether it’s a residents’ fun day, an AGM or a launch of some new activity this conference helps you get it right. We’ll take you through the checklist of what makes a good event and tell you what works and what doesn’t!

An information pack will be sent to all participants prior to the telephone conference and a summary of the discussion will be sent to all participants around 2-3 weeks after the telephone conference.

How does a telephone conference work?
To take part all you need is a telephone – most people take part from home.

Up to 10 people are linked with a lead speaker who has an in-depth knowledge on the topic to be discussed. They will introduce the subject and get the discussion going and a chairperson will make sure the discussion runs smoothly.

We call you on the telephone number you give us at the time the conference is due to start.

All participants are sent an ‘information pack’ of useful information on the topic to be discussed several days before the conference, and afterwards we produce a brief report to feedback the key messages.

If you want to register your interest or book a place from the programme….

  1. First of all pick a subject that interests you from the programme.
  2. Then contact Word Association to book a place, using one of the methods below.
  3. They will check with your paying organisation and then confirm your booked place.
  4. I will send you a pack of useful information and ideas to give you some things to think about before the conference. The discussion lasts for an hour and gives you a chance to share problems, ideas and views with the other participants. I will also arrange for a lead speaker to introduce the topic and start the discussion off whilst our chairperson helps to make sure that it runs smoothly and everyone has a say.
  5. Afterwards I will send you a report setting out the key messages emerging from your conference.
  6. The organisation paying for you to take part will be sent an invoice the month after the conference has taken place (and they will also be given a copy of the post conference report).

Costs
The cost of the conference, information pack and report is £40 per person. This is normally paid by the organisation who is supporting you to take part. Please ask us for our terms and conditions as costs will be incurred if you book a place but fail to take part.
